If you are
thinking about adopting a pet ask yourself the following questions:
1.
Are you ready to share your life with a pet? To adopt a pet
is to make a commitment for his or her lifetime. Properly cared
for, a pet can live for a long time.
2. Do you have the time to commit to your pet? Pets may have
a reputation of being independent, but the truth is that they get
lonely and bored when left alone all day and all night. If you have
young children, are the children sufficiently supervised so they
and the pet can play together happily and safely?
3. Can you make a financial commitment to your pet? Each
year you will be responsible for veterinary care, food, boarding,
and other expenses. There is no way to economize significantly on
pet care basics. Quality pet food should not be replaced with table
scraps. Veterinary attention and vaccinations must be kept current
if your pet is to live a long, healthy, and happy life.
4. Is your home situation relatively stable? Pets, especially
new arrivals, appreciate a stable routine at home. If you family
is in a period of crisis, it would be wiser and kinder to wait until
your problems are resolved before bringing home a new pet.
5. Can you provide a secure home? While most pets adjust
to changing homes as long as they have their people and familiar
household items as reference points, if you have a career that calls
for international postings, you may be faced with the wrenching
choice of leaving your pet behind with friends for a few years,
or subjecting him or her to extended kennel stays in order to satisfy
local quarantine laws.
If you answered "No" to any of these questions, you may
want to rethink adopting a pet at this time. However, if you answered
"Yes" to these questions, then review the information
below.
In order to
adopt an animal the Klamath Humane Society requires that potential
adopters follows these regulations:
Potential adopters must have a fenced yard.
Potential adopters must sign an agreement to provide proper
and sufficient food, water, shelter, and veterinarian treatment as
the animal may require throughout its lifetime. The adopter agrees
not to sell, give away, or abandon the animal, but to keep the animal
in loving custody, and the animal will be a family member, where physical
and emotional well-being are the objectives.
If it becomes impossible for the potential adopter to care
for the animal, they agree to return it to the Klamath Humane Society.
Potential adopters must agree to give the Klamath Humane Society
permission to review the animal's home at any reasonable time, and
to remove the animal if the home is unsuitable, or if the animal has
been mistreated in any way.
Potential adopters must agree to these conditions:
1. The animal will not be used for experiments of any kind.
2. The animal will not be permitted to run at large or become a public
nuisance.
3. The adopter will retrieve the animal from the Klamath Humane Society
Shelter if it is impounded.
4. The adopter will not hold the Klamath Humane Society responsible
for any present or future illness of the animal, or damage that the
animal may do to any person or property.
5. All pets must be spayed or neutered before adoption.
