Klamath Humane Society's
Project Animal Shelter
The mission of Project Animal Shelter:
To build an efficient, inviting new Animal Shelter (with proper ventilation, drainage, and separate pet areas) to care for all stray, abandoned, and abused animals in Klamath County .
The new Animal Shelter:
The new Animal Shelter will have separate areas for stray dogs, adoptable dogs, pups, cats, kittens, treatment and medical quarantine rooms. There will be visitor areas for those wishing to spend time with a pet before adopting, and outside exercise areas for dogs and cats. The design will focus on maintaining the health of the pets through state of the art ventilation, separation and treatment of the sick. A multi-purpose education room will be available to host tours. Education about spay and neuter, to stop the pet overpopulation problem, and responsible pet ownership is needed. The new Animal Shelter will be a community center for pet lovers to volunteer and help the animals.
The current Animal Shelter:
The Humane Society Animal Shelter, located at 500 Miller Island Road , is old and poorly designed. Though the facility is clean, has outside visitor and exercise yards for the dogs and a separate cat room, the current facility has many challenges.
Current Animal Shelter challenges:
The current Animal Shelter is located on property that has a high water table, a well and a septic system that routinely has problems. The ventilation, septic, and drainage systems are all challenged. The puppy area is without floor drains and is a nightmare to clean. The foundation on the building is too low and portions of the facility flood when there's a hard rain. The isolation area is too small and hard to clean safely. Without separate pet areas for incoming, sick, and those available for adoption, it is hard to manage the health of the animals. It's definitely time for a new Animal Shelter to care for the homeless pets of our community! Through community support for Project Animal Shelter, a new Shelter will be built.
